There two types of light source: Direct and Indirect.
Direct light means when you can see the light bulbs. Most lights in homes are direct. Chandeliers, canister/recessed lights, ceiling fan lights are some of the most common direct lights. Table lamps and wall sconces are direct light with shades.
Indirect light is more desirable, when you don't see the bulbs. They are up-lights with no glare and the best choice when a relaxing, tranquil environment is what you are looking for. They can also be down-light mostly exists in a commercial theater along the floor for foot lighting/
